The unglamorous case for writing things down
Documentation is not bureaucracy. It is the only defence against a project that depends on one person remembering.
Verbal agreements decay at a predictable rate: about a week. After that, two people remember two different projects.
You do not need a wiki. You need a dated decision log: what we decided, why, who agreed, what we ruled out. Five lines per entry. It ends more arguments than any process document I have ever written.
What to log
- Decisions, with the option you rejected
- Assumptions you are billing against
- Anything a client asked for verbally
